Abel

Abel “Mighty Mouse” Nunez is of Mexican descent and a Northern California native, born in Salinas Ca, on 08-03-1983 in the heart of the “Salinas Valley”. Mighty Mouse is the 3rd of four brothers and holds strong family values. As a youth growing up he watched his father Juan “Canelo” Nunez play semi-pro soccer here in California and professional futbol in Mexico. Being 1 of 4 brothers, there was constant competition with sports. Mighty Mouse ran track throughout elementary and Junior High, also playing basketball for his Junior High school team. During this time, he learned how to breakdance, which led to a new found passion for the Brazilian Martial Art of “Capoeira”. He practiced “Capoeira” for a few years and was holding lunch time sessions while he was in High School. Mighty Mouse was approached by the faculty to teach what he knew in a PE Class, but for liability reasons, he wasn’t able to get the class started. He did however continue to teach his noon time sessions. After he graduated from “Tulare Western High” he and his family moved to San Diego CA, where he became an electrician. Abel has been a student of the “Sweet Science” of Boxing, going on four years. He began his training under “Juan Cruz” who held an impressive world class amateur boxing career. He formed part of the U.S. national team, which traveled around the globe representing the U.S. with former teammates and former World Champions : Fernando “Feroz” Vargas (IBF/WBA 154lbs),Carlos “El zurdo de oro” Navarro (WBU 130lbs) and many other big name Prize fighters. Abel quickly picked up the fundamentals of Boxing and developed a tremendous ability on using the focus mitts. Not long after he began training he started coaching at Mongoose Boxing in San Diego. There he prepared fighters at both the amateur and professional level to fight. Abel decided to make a career move and began working with Campo Familia Boxing. CF Boxing was a more of a professional fighter based gym, so the focus was predominantly on the pros and traveling to different venues, but there were also a number of amateur fighters fighting out of the gym. During his time at CF boxing Abel had the privilege of working the corner during numerous bouts with world class trainer “Romulo” who was the long time trainer of former Lightweight World Champion “Jose Luis Castillo”. Abel’s mission here at The Boxing Club is to help people get in great shape, help people obtain knowledge of the “Sweet Science”, and to clear up the negative stigma that surrounds the beautiful art of Boxing.
