Recovery Tips for Sensitive Skin

 

Let’s picture this scenario together. You’ve been working for months to get your skin to a healthy place and actually following the skin routine that you’ve mapped out for your “sensitive skin”. Your skin finally has decided to stop throwing temper tantrums. But then… you veer off with one product and now you feel like you’re starting from square one all over again. Plus, the feeling that stays in your gut about not knowing how long it will take to get back to its happy place is nail-biting worthy (10/10 do not recommend). 

 

The term “sensitive skin” is widely used across the board by dermatologists, doctors, make-up and skincare companies, and the beauty industry in general. And rightfully so, even though it is not technically a clinical term. Arielle Nagler, M.D., a dermatologist at NYU claims that “over half of her patients come in saying they have sensitive skin”. This shouldn’t be shocking news, especially with all of the sh*t that is put into our products. This is your reminder that the beauty industry is always trying to sell us something (duh!), but that for the most part, less is more when it comes to your beauty routine. 

 

Time to chuck that product that messed with your skin and here are some tips on how to get it back on the smooth skin track. Caren Campbell, a board-certified dermatologist states that the likelihood of the irritation is, “the clogging of a pore as the primary cause”. Then, it becomes an uphill battle the clogged pore becomes home for bacteria and oil. 

 

Drop by your dermatologist.

This may not always be a feasible option, but it is one of the smartest options. This is especially important if your skin is ultra-sensitive. A cortisone shot or whitehead treatment would be a likely treatment option. 

What not to do:

Pick, pop, or mess with any breakouts. 

Pharmacy run.

If the outbreak is active, do a pharmacy run and grab some benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide removes dead skin cells from the pores and helps speed up the healing process. Use a small dab on a cotton pad once or twice a day should help make a major change. A hydrocortisone cream may also be a good option, but it is important to make sure to not incorporate this as a long-term solution because it can and WILL backfire on you.

A skin diet. 

And no, this doesn’t mean to completely change your diet that you eat. It means to eliminate your skin routine and then re-introduce it one by one. A skin diet is recommended to see which product is irritating the skin or combination of products that are making the skin unhappy. This is 

Fragrance-free.

Don’t let the beauty industry fool you. It might be nice to smell good, but if you have sensitive skin, nice smelling products need to go. Don’t do yourself a disservice. We care too much about you and your skin.

It will be okay.

It’s frustrating, but it’s all about being aware.
