Calvin Sanders was born in Waukegan, Illinois and moved to San Diego in 1972. He was first introduced to martial arts by his father in Illinois. Throughout his childhood and high school, Calvin was an active athlete. He played football and ran hurdles for his track team in high school. When Calvin was about 16, he began to get serious about martial arts. He took up American Kenpo, a type of Karate characterized by quick and powerful striking, and is now a 5th degree black belt. Sanders began practicing escrima, or stick and knife fighting, at age 50 and is a blackbelt. Currently, he is working towards his third black belt in Jiu Jitsu. Calvin became a trainer by accident, when people at the gym began asking him for help as he trained for his belt tests. He wouldn’t have it any other way though. Calvin loves pushing people to their limits with fitness and watching their face light up when they realize what they can achieve.
